For the first time, Dan Corson’s Rain Drum Courtyard's is ready to perform as part of your musical or artistic expression (via band or solo music, dance, spoken word, etc). Sculptor Tom Mattausch (Seattle) will be joined by musician/producer Son Vardy of Plus Minus Live (LA) to offer a two-session seminar that allows participants to perform alongside their own compositions for the musical rain drums.
The class, "Rain Drum Collaboration Performance Sessions," meets onsite at the unique Watershed Education Center facility Saturday June 22 & June 29, noon-4pm. First, Tom will take you behind the naturalistic installation's invisible technological curtain to see how this one-of-a-kind electro-musical art installation uses water drops to play 17 drums in a beautiful, stream-filled courtyard. Next you'll head to the onsite classrooms as Son helps you explore how easy it is to point-and-click to create MIDI files (electronic sheet music) to play on the drums.
After you’ve had a chance to rehearse, the following Saturday (June 29) we will hold a public concert for class participants (who can be joined in their performance by other band members or groups) to perform live along with your rain drum composition!
Your brief concert or performance in the Rain Drum Courtyard with your custom drum track will be recorded on two mics and a Go-Pro (or your own video camera) …and the memories of all in attendance.
The class is open to anyone 14+ (any age when accompanied by a parent) with no prior knowledge requirement (bring laptop/tablet if available). The Watershed Education Center has an array of exhibits elucidating the water cycle and alpine ecosystems, and is a short walk from the Rattlesnake Ridge trailhead, which would make a great before or after class hike.
If you have questions about the class or have signed up, send me an email! Also, if you have any questions about using Rain Drum Courtyard to help fulfill your artistic and musical visions, teach music composition, or have questions about creating a new art installation, please let me know.
